Dr. Jesse Wheeler

Dr. Jesse Wheeler was born and raised in the Peterborough, including education at St. Theresa's Elementary and St. Peter's Secondary Schools. He completed a degree in Psychology at Trent University, followed by medical school at Queen's University. He went on to be one of the first four Family Medicine residents at the Queen's Peterborough-Kawartha Site, completing much of his training right here at the Medical Centre. At the present time, Dr. Wheeler provides comprehensive primary care in the office, as well as inpatient hospital care at PRHC, and office-based procedures such as joint injections and skin biopsies. In association with Queen's University and other institutions, our office will also be hosting medical learners, potentially including family medicine residents, medical students, and nursing students.

Staff Information

Our office team includes our receptionist Melanie, who greets patients with a smile and keeps the office running smoothly, and our nurse Jen who brings a broad array of skills including expertise in Emergency Medicine, Cardiology, Long-term care, and Lactation support.

Appointment Scheduling

Urgent visits can be arranged by telephone, usually the same day or within a few days. All requests for appointments will be triaged (prioritized) by the receptionist, and patients will be asked to provide specific information about their concern(s) so that we can allot an appropriate amount of time. Please arrive on time. We will do everything we can to ensure that the office runs efficiently and on time. We reserve the right to rebook patients who are late for appointments, or whose concerns cannot be appropriately assessed in the time available.

Family Health Team Services/After Hours/Holidays

Unlike the days when family physicians worked alone, and patients were left without health care when their doctor was away, our family physicians work together as a Family Health Organization/Family Health Team, providing extra coverage for one another and for our patients. By "rostering" (signing up) with the Team, patients have access to the following services:

  • A daytime "On Call" physician for urgent issues on days and weeks when we are away - Contact Switchboard at 705-743-6222 for the office of the Doctor on Call; appointments required.
  • Extended Hours Clinics for urgent issues Monday-Thursday 5pm-8pm and Saturday morning 8am-2pm and Sunday from 9am-12pm - call 705-743-6222 during the first hour of the clinic for an appointment.
  • Allied health services including Mental Health, Dietician, Pharmacy Consultation, and specialized Nursing services.
  • Uninsured Services

Some medical services are not covered by the Ontario Health Insurance Plan (OHIP). For example, this includes completion of certain insurance forms and Driver’s Medical examinations. A list of common uninsured services will be provided in your Office Policies package, or can be obtained from our receptionist. Payment is required at the time the service is completed. That said, we realize and will always take into consideration that some patients may not be able to pay for these services. Please do not hesitate to inform us if these charges pose a financial hardship to you. Alternative arrangements can be made.

    Missed Appointment Policy

Missed appointments may prevent other patients from accessing much-needed care, and cause added expense for the office. As such, missed appointments without one business day's notice will be charged to the patient.

    Prescribing Policies

Most prescriptions should be renewed in person at a scheduled office visit. It is the patient’s responsibility, as an active partner in their health care, to monitor their prescriptions and request an appointment at least 2 weeks prior to prescriptions expiring. Otherwise, there is a $15 charge for prescription renewals requested by telephone or fax, unless previously agreed.

    Referrals to Specialists

We recognize the scope of family practice and the need for occasional referral to specialty services. However, this will be at our discretion and we will use evidence-based guidelines to direct these decisions. Before any referral is arranged, patients must see us for appropriate assessment and discussion to facilitate a faster and more effective consultation.

What to Bring to Each Visit

    1. All current medications in their bottles (if not practical, a list with name, dose & frequency)
    2. Health Card (without a valid Health card, you will not be seen)

    Scent Policy

For the comfort and health of our patients, staff and physicians we request your support for our scent aware facility by refraining from the use of scented products and smoking products prior to visiting with us.
